But Mykonos is not just pretty on the surface; it is a place of rich history and culture and its existence goes deep into antiquity. According to mythology, Mykonos was formed from the petrified bodies of the Giants, killed by Hercules while the name Mykonos comes from Apollo's grandson. Today the Gyzi Castle of Paleokastro, the Neolithic settlements in Ftelia and all the ancient ruins around the island still unfold the story of the island.
Mykonos is surrounded by some of the top island destinations in Greece such as Paros, Syros, Naxos and the famous island of Delos, making Mykonos a perfect base for a sailing holiday. The Cycladic architecture is another favorite; the island is filled with beaming whitewashed houses topped with deep, royal-blue domes, thus every corner of the island is picture perfect! Mykonos is all around charming with the famous pelicans that roam freely around Gialos, the tangled, little cobblestone alleys of Chora - the main town of Mykonos, the salty Aegean breeze and the warm golden sun - the list is endless, but one thing is for sure; once you step foot on the island you will keep coming back!
